Glass Mountains Blue Seas

Reflections / Mark Millan

…the truest stories are the ones we shape ourselves.Theater director, Sofia Vgenopoulou

It was our driver who picked us up from visiting the beaches of Belos who told us the stat that Crete had the highest death toll from car accidents throughout the Greek islands. Oh really? How reassuring as he drove crazily thru the back roads of Kimissimo to avoid traffic. It started by me asking what were all the little churches along the roadway.

Cute I thought till we heard the explanation. Those lost to car accidents. Oh, not so cute any longer…

But I did not want to rent a car and drive myself. Been a little shy since our last rental in Spain. It was while visiting Toledo a couple years ago that we got jammed between two ancient walls while navigating our way through a narrow maze to our hotel – thanks to google maps and my extreme intention to get there. Wading through ancient ruins and dreams of Knossos you sense the expanse of time and the blip of a moment we are here. Learning of the grandeur of kings and princesses that live only till their early thirties, if lucky; makes you feel like a relic.

Imagine years from now when people may live for 100s of years and look back at us and think how odd that we only lived into our 80s, 90s, early 100s, if lucky.

Even on Rethymnon we found ourselves lost in another world…

We sailed from Crete to the shores and villages of Paros to unearth its offerings. And we even rented a car! And hopefully we’ll not see anymore little churches on the sides of the road.

Some of the views and wall art around Rethymnon and Paros. Truly amazing!
