Icelandia II

It was during World War II that Iceland finally gained its independence from Denmark. While occupied by the Nazis they finally let her go after some 400 years under the thumb of Danish rule. In that regard, Iceland is a fairly new and independent nation. And you feel it as you ramble through the countryside and mingle with locals.

At night from our hotel room we could see the beam of light shooting to the sky from John Lennon’s memorial honoring his birthday, October 9th. Yoko Ono had selected the site as she recognized Iceland as a peaceful place and a country with no military.

We wandered the countryside our first few days taking in the waterfalls, lava fields, black sand beaches, and miles of sheep and wandering beautiful horses. It was our 2nd time here and we wanted to see and learn more about this magical place.

We were lucky to visit and have a home cooked meal at a horse ranch with nearly 200 amazing horses in an unbelievable setting.

  1. Amazing photos! Looks amazing and wondrous….I found the conference agenda online – what a great assembly and interesting sessions – I see you’re up on Monday afternoon. I’m sure you will do well and your international horizons will expand even more. Is Mars next? Thanks for the click stream updates…hope the Bonds journey goes well and they arrive safely.

  2. Great pics, and beautifully written comments as always Mark. — It’s a pleasure to read about the inspiration and affection you and Sue benefit from due to making time to visit new places, and experiencing the richness of the variety that makes up the amazing human tapestry we are all a part of.

    GOOD Stuff!
